The all-wheel drive Toyota Highlander Hybrid appeared in 2004. The car was equipped with a powerful hybrid engine of the new THS II system and an E-Four electric transmission.

The THS II hybrid powertrain is located at the front of the body, it includes a 3.3-liter V6 engine that develops a maximum power of 211 hp and a high-speed 167 hp high voltage electric motor.

At the rear is another 68 hp electric motor that forms part of the E-Four's drivetrain.

The power plant produces power up to 272 hp, and the consumption in the 10/15 mode is only 5.6 liters of gasoline per 100 km.
